Protonix blocks the production of stomach acid. It is prescribed to heal an ailment called erosive esophagitis (an extreme inflammation of the passage towards the stomach) a result of a persistent backflow of stomach acid (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Later, it could be prescribed to take care of healing and prevent a relapse. It is also used in treating conditions marked by constant overproduction of stomach acid, for example Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix is a member from the "proton pump inhibitor" class of acid blockers.
